Chamois and surrondings
Go BackChamois with its 1815 a.s.l. is the highest village in Valle d’Aosta and one of the highest in Italy. It is located in the valley of Valtournenche ( the Matterhorn valley), facing south-east which creates a favorable climate both in summer and winter.
Chamois is made up of seven small hamlets (hameaux), which were originally connected to Valtournenche via an old mule track made up of 93 hairpin bends. During the 50s, the decision to build the Buisson-Chamois cable car was made in order to connect Chamois to the valley. Therefore Chamois is a charming car-free village the only municipality in Italy.
Landscape restrictions have helped to maintain the landscape, creating ideal conditions for a sustainable eco-tourism, which thrives on the knowledge of the surrounding nature, Alpine culture and sport activities throughout the year.
Chamois is connected to La Magdeleine by an unpaved road, used as a bike path in summer, a cross-country skiing path in the winter and a walking path throughout the year. The two locations together make up the Pearl of the Alps, promoters of sustainability, land protection and alpine culture.
